The Poet’s Passion

Oh that I would write only goodness!
That my cross not be of foolishness!

But of my heart
I cannot count it guile
Nor of my mind
Does it seek darkness
Even my flesh wishes
To speak only with peace!

But darkness I know
And sin had I mastered
Debauchery and slime I drank in
Self will did I place above others

How can I speak
of the wickedness of man?
For I was that wicked man!

How can I speak
Of the realm of darkness?
For I was a builder of darkness!

How can I speak
Of the arrogant pride of man?
For I was that fearful man hiding!

How can I speak
Of the sorrows of man?
For I was that sorrowful man!

How can I speak
Of the need for repentance
And to return to a loving God?

For I was that son of shame
Who had great need of humility!

He who speaks
Of that he himself knows not
Is a liar before the people

He who preaches
Of that which he has done not
Is a liar before the church

And he who proclaims
Of that which he has not lived
Is a liar before God

He who speaks of judgment
Is under judgment himself
And he who speaks of judgment
Without judging himself
Is judged by another
But faith and wisdom reveal all
So that even the dead may see
And the fallen may soar in spirit
Where wicked condemnation
Is found in all law of earth

But He who judges man lastly
Is the righteous judge of Heaven
How gracious a truth it is!

I am that man whom God so loved and awakened to His Glory!

Not a man of worth or wisdom
Not a man of goodness or peace
Not a man of discipline or control
Not a man of love or kindness
But a dead man of want was I

And from all these things
Were they turned to life
From darkness to light
And anger to peace
Love of self to love of others
Fear of God to Love of God

And what is it worth
To righteous men?
Know then that if the dead rise
So too shall the living continue
If the lawless are loved
So too shall the humble be exalted

For God taught me
That I should love my enemies
So that as I raise them up
I too am raised together with them!

But of principle does law still stand

For God taught me
To forgive my enemies
So that as I make peace in my heart
So too is peace in God about me

That of love is no law against!

So I speak not of idle thought
Nor opinion of willfulness
Neither do l decree in pride
But of direct experience write

And as more goodness awakens
More goodness will be spoken
As God reveals, so too shall I express

For the purpose of all is for God
And for the message of hope
And the promise of salvation
Given by Him even to men as myself
Accepted by the lost
Who cries out in darkness

So that God had always
Directed my life – truly revealed
Do we pray always that God
Directs my words – faith revealed

That which finds its way to others
Was for them and their journey
And that which is folly to others
Was not for them to comprehend

It is God who gives authority
Of words and deeds and action
And God who opens or closes
It is God who teaches all things
Even of those we did in sin
Are made profitable to spirit by God
As it is God who turns evil to good
And God who turns death
To Life
