Spirits

The Struggle of Flesh vs. Spirit – The poem confronts the limitations of human thought, law, and emotion, declaring that true endurance and wisdom cannot be born of the flesh, but only through the Spirit.

Isolation and Divine Connection – In the midst of pain, sickness, and abandonment, the speaker finds strength not in the world or others, but through a personal, spiritual bond with God.

The Futility of Earthly Pursuits – Treasure, adventure, pleasure, even companionship, all prove fleeting, yet the poem emphasizes that only spiritual truth offers satisfaction beyond the grave.

Faith Born from Suffering – The speaker’s suffering becomes the crucible in which spiritual truths are revealed, showing that divine insight often comes through long, painful nights of prayer.

A Declaration of Spiritual Reality – This is not just lament but proclamation—the poet affirms the eternal power of the Spirit over the vanities of the flesh and boldly rejects the judgments and blindness of the world.

Spirits

Where shall a man endure
When his mind is pressed to ashes
Crushing each hope before him
And the pain of his heart overcomes him?

He is not a shell of nothingness

For the weight of his burden
He cannot deny
And the curse upon his soul
He cannot deflect

There must be a way!

But alone – where can it be found?
Without reason – Who can answer it?
For this grande world will have its way
And a fortress of treasures are not enough

Even a brother departs for adventure
And a promise made cannot withstand it
Even a day brings forth change
And a moment visits upon our sorrow

Are there none who are satisfied?

On the rock of my faith covenant
Shall not one blessing be forgot
Nor shall a kiss ever be forsaken
In the court of this worlds blasphemy

As it was not mere flesh and blood
Nor only heart and will
Neither fear, need or duty
But that also of the spirit – Did I make word

Though it may be the throne of man that titles it
And the realm of darkness that belittles it
And the ways of flesh that abandons it
I AM not of such weakness

As there is not one law of man
That will not be called foolish
And not one thought of man
That anyone shall consider

As there is not one word of darkness
That is made true by its desire
And not one curse of judgement
That is made light in heaven

As there is not one manner of the flesh
That can see beyond its own mind
Nor one belief of flesh
That lasts beyond the grave

But he who dwells in the spirit
Though none shall follow
And he who trusts in the everlasting
Though all do mock and deny

He shall be satisfied

As ALL things of the earth bring pleasure
And many things alike also pain
Yet there are none that can satisfy, nor steal
But for that moment – is it felt so

Faith shall never be found in bones
There only in the heart of ones Spirit
And hope has never grown in the flesh
There only in the desire of the Spirit

We shall not find truth among mankind
But there it is always waiting for us
And we shall not know everlasting peace
Except in the reality of God’s Spirit

These things were spoken to me
During the torment of my sickness
These things came upon me
In the prayers of my long nights

I had forgotten

Spirits we are
