Revelation of the Two Wolves

The Cycle of Division and Strife – The story reveals how human conflict, driven by desire and ambition, can lead to destruction. The division of the brothers mirrors the division within all people, teaching that unresolved disputes can consume entire generations.

The Loss of Wisdom and Tradition – The elders carried the knowledge of the past, but when their wisdom was ignored, it perished with them. This highlights the dangers of forgetting history, as lost teachings leave future generations vulnerable to repeating past mistakes.

The Dual Nature of Man – The transformation of the brothers into two wolves symbolizes the eternal struggle within every person. One wolf is ruled by instinct and desire, while the other by thought and emotion. Every man must contend with both and seek balance.

The Power of Choice and Awakening – The story suggests that no man is wise enough to settle the conflict alone. True understanding comes from seeking the Great Spirit, realizing that what we believe to be good or bad is often shaped by vanity and pride.

Restoration Through Unity and Love – The woman represents wisdom and harmony, lost through conflict and taken by those who do not cherish her. Only by resolving the inner struggle can man restore balance, free what was lost, and heal the earth.

Revelation of the Two Wolves

There was a proud people
Who watched over the lands
The whole north was their home
They did not carry a weapon
Against each other

Many generations they spoke of the secrets
Of all that existed before them in their lands
Stories of the ancient peoples
That had grown beyond their wisdom
And long ago, lost all that they had built

Life was reborn with the new tribe
As they wondered they scattered seed
And protected the life of all creatures
So that in time they too could rest
Knowing they had healed the earth

But as they meditated and told stories
Their young men had not laboured
They did not love the earth as their fathers
They did not respect life as their mothers
They had not seen all the Great Spirit’s creation

The Elder of the tribe had two sons
Neither of their hearts were strong as their Father
Both of them had placed their desire on one woman
And brought disharmony to the whole tribe
Not even with much counsel did they gain wisdom

The brothers argued about who would marry
Neither of them would relent their will
The firstborn believed the woman was his right
The voice of the woman was not heard
She had loved the younger brother

The day of the strength of the sun
The second brother had become impatient
So he took up a Tuknuati spear to slay his older brother
He was going to take the woman he loved
But the mother cried out and the Father stopped him

The father decided to give the woman
To the younger brother
Hoping to quiet his violence
But the first born still desired the woman
The betrayal of custom could not be healed

A long sitting of the tribe took place
To decide what to do with the warring brothers
The Elder spoke up to all his people
The two brothers could not dwell together
A decision had to be made for the people

All the elders were wise
They knew the people had become complacent
So the tribe was divided into three
One brother would go east
The other brother was sent west

The remaining people stayed in the middle
To stand between the brothers
Life was difficult again for the three bands
This brought strength back to the people
In time they were as three nations

The tribe to the east and of the west
No longer told the stories of the ancients
For the young had not listened when growing
Their attention was on ambition
They wanted to be stronger than the others

Soon a punishing winter came upon the land
The central tribe did not survive its wrath
The wisdom of the elders perished
All the old stories were lost also with them
And the brothers again turned against each other

But another people came up from the south
They had known war always and were strong
They attacked both camps of the brothers
Still the brothers argument would not relent
Both of them believed their hearts to be right

After many terrible losses and harm to the land
No one remained of the once proud people
The two brothers were the last of their blood
The woman they both loved was taken by the south
She remained in bondage to serve foreigners

Both brothers blamed the other for their annihilation
Still they could not forgive and make peace
They were left to wander in destitution
Now there were no elders to judge and consider
The foreigners left them alone as a marvel until death

So the Great Spirit
Looked upon the two remnant
And in compassion wanted us to remember them
Their lesson had not been settled together
And it had cost the existence of their blood

The Creator decided to transform the brothers
They were made into two wolves of strong will
One wolf is violent with instinct and desire
The other wolf is powerful with thought and emotion
Both wolves still believe themselves to be right

The spirit of the wolves were gathered up
The Great Spirit placed them into all men of earth
Even those born until the end of time
So that each man himself contends with both
He must, in his life, settle the matter

Every man goes through the lessons of the brothers
Some seasons he believes the younger wolf inside
Some seasons he believes the older wolf inside
But with age comes the judgement
As both still believe they are right

And if a man can find the truth of them
Which no man is wise enough to settle
That what he believes to be good, is vanity
And what he believes to be bad, is hubris
Is it hoped he seeks the Great Spirit and awakening

In this also
Can the love of the woman be answered
Her bondage of the foreigner can be freed
Her stories can be returned to her
And she can again heal the earth with man
