Kings
In the hallowed halls of stone-built Kings
Doth time inscribe their measured step
With hands that wring and gazes mourn
For crowns ill yearned, yet burdens borne
Our time hath never such men beheld
As those Kings who tread in shadowed might
Alone they walked through mortal ken
To weigh the scales of histories veiled
Of books and fables, morals sing!
Yet they but mirror men of clay
For victor’s tongues weave falsehoods fair
And pale truths fade from a King’s despair
Yet in the silence, the unspoken lays
Doth shine the light of burdened souls
Alone King’s kept their dreadful charge
In darkest nights, their selves dissolved
For all we know, and all unlearned
Lies at the heart of every strife
The King, in prayers, his sorrows spilled
To Heaven’s vault his anguish willed
Upon the ramparts did they stand
And gaze into the endless night
Through flickered halls and shadowed stone
They bore the weight of realms alone
To shadows cried, no echo came
For none could grasp his grievous load
Each moment mocked his mortal frame
He is a sovereign bound to be unknown
What sacrifice may tongue explain?
What faith endure such boundless strain?
What pen or verse shall mortals bring
To name the hells endured by Kings?
Lo, the world records its gilded hope
In painted lies of fleeting worth
Reflections spun by men’s conceit
To feign a grasp of why we be
Yet greater truths are beyond the veil
And neither scribed nor sung in halls
They whisper amongst celestial spheres
Though earth doth dwell in their resolve
Who dares ordain what may be wrought?
Who shall decide to build or break?
For every thought, his nation bends
Each choice doth mark our fleeting days
By Heaven’s will and Angels charge
And by the hand of God on high
Alone are borne the King’s great woes
Their thrones as crosses—weight untold
Indeed, their chronicles lost
Our love of Kings betrayed
