Human
It is human to think
That those who struggle
Must have done a wrong
And are paying for it now
It is human to think
That the poor must be lazy
Or perhaps uneducated
And suffer for it with poverty
It is human to think
That they who lose are losers
And they who win are winners
And they who tried still lost
It is human to think
That the mentally challenged are dumb
That the sick are being punished
That the drunk and addict is cursed
It is human to judge
That the troubled soul
Has troubled themselves
Paying now for their stupidity
It is human to think
That beauty is wealth
And money is power
And fame is glory
Do we not know
That these ideas
Exist only among us?
As I am not who I was ten years ago
Nor the same ten years before that
Even different again previously
And altogether another in youth
Does our own path reveal our folly
For what a man judges of another man
Is limited to the life of he who judges
As he cannot see
What he does not possess
Revealing only his own quality
As one can be seen
Who is an accountant by trade
But who can know without being told?
And another can be seen
Who is a musician of talent
And who can know by looking at him?
And a third can be seen
Who is a philosopher of high degree
Yet who can know without listening?
If we cannot even know
That which is human of a man
Through sight of his condition
How do we think we can know
Of another’s worth to God
By the sight of their condition?
The greatest of men
In time have also been the smallest
And the strongest of men
In time have also worn chains
And the most powerful of men
In time have also been the weakest
And the wisest of men
In time have also been the most foolish
We who are flesh indeed cannot judge
For not one of us can predict tomorrow
Shall we live, shall we die?
Who can know?
Shall we fall, shall we rise
Who can know?
Indeed the prophets of God
Were rarely of worldly prowess
And the righteous men of God
Speak not of their own righteousness
Truly the holy men of God
Were made holy by God, not themselves
And the works of God, God chooses
Many who fall
paid for another’s crime
And many who lose
Gained a more valuable gift
While many who win
Cheated their way to victory
And many who are poor
Have given all to others
And many who are unwanted by men
Are great assets to God’s will
Trials, tribulations and powerlessness
All of these are not as they seen
Nor can their worth be known
Except by they who endure
For the steel is pounded into a sword
And the fear is driven to courage
Making worthlessness into worth
And experience into wisdom
Truly I say
There is not one trap of life on earth
That God cannot release
That God cannot use to advantage
That God cannot turn to good
For the experiences of life
Are for our greater education
Wether they be good or bad
Wether they appear as nothing
Or as a great treasure
All are made that we may grow
And nothing is wasted of a man’s life
Not even their grievous sins
Except that the man close his eyes
And chooses self ignorance and pride
Yet even that one of great denial
Will face what cannot be denied
Will account for what he ignored
And will know what he avoided
Indeed his fear increases
Along with his pride
All things happen to all
And they of pride try to hide it
But even this to God is an asset
And a tool of truth at the proper time
Redeeming the man because of the sin
For which he would not have cried
Except for his crime
That now by God has freed him
As I think little of walking
But to the paralyzed it is weighty
So too does struggle make strong
As he who overcomes is greater
Than he who was not challenged
Nor can we see greatness on earth
As weakness of their spirit
For those who need not struggle
Are challenged as we cannot see
And many are playing a different role
Than they themselves are aware
It is Godly to see a man struggle
And offer help with hope and acceptance
It is Godly to see a man prosper
And offer help with hope and acceptance
It is Godly to let God judge
And to see all on earth
As His children – for we are from God
And as men we cannot see
That the wicked may one day be humbled
And serve and love all
Nor can we see that the righteous man
May one day become terrible
And abuse and wound all
Neither can we know
God’s personal plans for them
Not even for ourselves may we know
Today I am not as I was
Tomorrow I will not be as today
And if even I cannot know
Of the merit of my current condition
(For the strength of my folly
Became the strength of my understanding)
How could I ever think to know
Yours?
