What Remains of Life
I speak for no other
as it should be
for my memories are my own
and my dignity cannot be given
by anyone else
Sometimes we have to go home
Sometimes we have to help another to find their way home
Sometimes we have to turn away from everything
Sometimes we realize the nature of our life
Sometimes we reach places
Known only in our own hearts
There is beauty in our history
and beauty in our sacred secrets
so profound and overwhelming
it reaches back through our entire past
even our future can no longer be dreamed without it
It is like hearing the voice of God
and knowing in all things
that there is nothing else real
Along the way
we meet those other souls we cherish
they have inspired us and cared for us
and made us proud of them
in such a way
we could never express their greatness enough
It is as we desire deep inside
to hug them eternally
because they do not know their worth
as we know it
Along the way
we see the dreams of mankind
unfolding in everything the world around us does
they show us art and literature and entertainment
they sing us songs and retell tales and laugh
they reveal the earth, nature, the sea, the mountains
and we awe at all men have done
wishing that every human could have witnessed their life
free
Along the way
we peer up into the sky, day or night
and we wonder and ponder at the universe
all around us
and all inside us
and all in the minds and hearts of mankind
There we unearth legends and gods and hopes
There we discover war and peace
There we come to want to believe
in Saviors and Kings
And Creators
Wishing all the while that something
can be real
As we wrestle with time and tide
and reason and emotion
along the way we too grow old
witnessing the rise and fall of everything
and everyone
even our own selves
as our mind and heart and bodies begin to fail
There we discover what remains
when all other things in a life
become as vain nothings
There we wish to give
of what remains
It is Love that remains
Love remains beside a friend
Love forgives a fool
Love remembers the fallen
Love honors the living
Love answers where logic fails
Love comforts where reason fails
Love praises those we used to judge
Love disarms our enemies
Love walks through heaven and hell – with another
Love lives on in the heart and mind and soul
of every living being upon the earth
and every living world of the Heavens
it does so, because Love gives
what nothing else can ever give
Love is the perfection of the Eternal God
Love is our home
