Man oh Man
What can a man be of his own?
Do I draw my own breath?
Do I beat my own heart?
Do I cause myself to hunger and thirst?
Do I make myself whole when broken?
Was it I who laid out my veins & nerves?
Was it I who determined my height?
Was it I who set my eyes and ears?
Was it I who formed my bones?
Who gave the talents within me?
Who gave the intellect and intent?
Who established my desire for love?
Who directed me towards seeking?
Who gave me the choice
Between life and death?
No… not I can claim anything at all
Nor did my parents set my course
Even all before and all after me
Made nothing within me of me!
Man can break what is made
Man can copy what is made
But what does man make
That was not made before?
Indeed we think it is new
Indeed we think it is us!
So I will say what has been given
It was God who formed these bones
And set this body to life.
It is God who chose this manner
And God who heals what is sick
It is God who shared His talent with me
It is God who shared His knowledge
God is the one who showed me love
And being His so too did I desire it
It is God who decided what I would find
And God who walks also with me
On the path of my seeking discovery
God is the master of life and of death
And to be given choice is a gift
For to that end are we made known
That we have been made as children
Even in darkness was God found!
For the valleys of death I walked
And they did not take me whole
Neither did the enemy destroy all
But offered only fearful riddles
Even in sorrow and sin was God there
For my destruction was sure
Yet I was saved!
My rebellion was pure
Yet I was salvaged
My blindness was perfected
Yet I was given sight
My ignorance was complete
Yet I was shown a new way
And all this not for the saving
Of my body
But for the eternal life
Of my spirit
For who can choose
From a hand that is empty?
If not for darkness and light
Who chooses light?
If not for sorrow and joy
Who chooses joy?
If not for experience and foolishness
Who chooses goodness?
Of my own I may choose
Of that death or of that life
But all of life is made by God
And none of the path did I create
And all of death is within God’s power
And none of that path did I form
I belong to God in all ways
Yet He still allows me to choose
I choose
And I am responsible for that choice
