Father of the Scribe

Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. – Proverbs 15:3

I write not that it should be praised
Nor do I speak to be heard of myself
Truly that youth has long past me
But for the sanity of my thoughts
And the promise of God to restore them

For I as a man am as all men
Hungry, thirsty, ravenous in desire
Needing, wanting, torn by self will
Critical, cynical, judgemental to the core
Hiding fear behind pride and arrogance

For I as a man am as some other men
Creative, intelligent, passion unbound
Seeking, empty, finding all vanity
Deceived, indoctrinated and lost
Stuck in a world bent on insanity

No amount of knowledge made balance
No amount of wealth made grace
No amount of power made peace
No amount of building satisfied
No amount of destroying understood

My works were committed to myself
With authority they were made
Above expectation were they done
Rewarded among human acceptance
And to the mountain top praised

Yet of my spirit was I lost
Bewilderment and sorrow ruled
Desperation lead to brokenness
Fear lead to failure and shame
There was no power to reconcile

And this is as it should be!
For the life of man is adventurous sure
And the course of which designed
That we ourselves discover a truth
Of our natural origin of God

The thirst of the body asks water
And the want of the mind is knowledge
The flesh requires a lovely touch
As our heart compares our worth
Yet the spirit awakens only with love

The spirit of God is in all things
But in self seeking we overlook
For the want of a full belly delivered
And its gift a blessing for sure
Tho far more was presented in that

Blessings are quickly forgotten
When flesh is all we enhance
For the works of man serve man
Until another man takes it away
Once again falling into despair

Blessings are quickly observable
When spirit is what becomes fed
For the works of God serve all life
And none can take it from us
Nor are we alone within ourselves

God walks with us in all we do
When our choice is to honor life
Every event uncovers mysteries
Each encounter provides wisdom
Revelations of life are made clear

With God as our faith and hope
The rattled mind becomes serene
The unsatisfied will becomes joy
The rebellious heart becomes grateful
And our spirits awaken to love

None of all I did on this earth
Could establish my thoughts to good
Nor even in success made right
And in failure came greater hell
Except for the turning to God

Speak to God often – everyday
In mind and heart and secret
For all things in us are heard by God
Not one word overlooked or ignored
As He is a loving Father and God

Speak always to God – in all things
Ask direction and thought
In all that you do and say
For God gives wisdom to all questions
And gives love in every answer

Speak to God when joyful or sad
Speak to God when angry with doubt
Speak to God when faith has fallen
Speak to God when filled with hope
As He is the master of all condition

What can we lose
In the commitment of such?
What did we gain in our vanity?
What does it matter to anyone else?
But to ourselves is it not our very life?

So consider a moment
A new thing of our spirit
For of this one truth is all found
That no one who goes to God
Can become weaker than he was
