The Well of Souls
The Search for True Peace and Harmony – There is no lasting peace when the different aspects of the self are in conflict. The poem expresses the longing for unity within, where the soul, mind, and body align in harmony under divine guidance.
The Powerlessness of the Self Without God – No strength, ritual, law, or sacrifice can achieve a truly well soul on its own. The poem reveals the limitations of human effort and the necessity of divine intervention for true spiritual wholeness.
Divine Restoration and Balance – Through surrender to God, the spirit, mind, and body can be healed, strengthened, and used as vessels of peace and life. The call to God is not just for personal transformation but also for the blessing and care of others.
The Assurance of God's Presence and Protection – The poem ends with confidence in God's sovereignty. Where God dwells, darkness cannot remain. The soul that trusts in Him finds security, strength, and the ultimate peace—declaring, "It is Well with My Soul."

The Well of Souls
Of what profit is there to my will
When departed from my own mind?
I am torn apart and in two
While dwelling as one
And what joy can be found in my thoughts
When my body betrays my very conscious?
I am perplexed and against my own self
While dwelling as one
And where can I seek to find peace
With all the world that does love
When no part of me is in harmony?
While dwelling as one
For the desire of the will is to live
To embrace the very nature of the everlasting
To channel the very quality of God
That life would be as it was meant to be
And the desire of the mind is to live
To believe itself a conquering force
To harness the prowess of its mastery
That life would be as it designs it to be
And the desire of the flesh is to live
To take what it demands for unrelenting thirst
To lust after its own hungry appetite of longing
That life would be as I consume its plunder
And the desire of the world is to live
To fit itself into what is acceptable to its dream
To fight for scraps from a table it cannot see
That life would be secure and acceptable to itself
Oh that the journey of my soul would not be as such
Though it must and cannot be altered
For no thing can be built if already done
Unless in portioned pieces first there are
That the form can be made thereof
And nothing can be at all to be found
If not first already there to be made
For how can one perceive of themselves
Without themselves an aware being
That their core established spirit have will?
Yet of the will of the spirit do I make enemy
Of my own mind!
For the mind betrays the desire of my heart
Plotting and writing scripts for all against life
That the will and body and world obey!
Yet of the will of the mind do I make enemy
Of my own flesh!
For the flesh betrays the desire of the my focus
Crying out with its own pains and needs
That the mind would depart from itself
Yet of the will of my flesh do I make enemy
Of all others I do love!
For the love of others is to have love shared
But the flesh fears all that is not of itself
That the world would bring destruction to it
No strength, no courage, no hope, no belief
Indeed no works or rights or ritual,
Neither blood, or sacrifice, or promise or law
Even to the truth of the grave can there be found
The power of one to accomplish a Well Soul
All desire of each makes war against one another
Though they are all mine of my experience
All power of each, greater than the other
That goodness does fail and obey the self alone
Not one thing I could tell myself, makes it not so
Great Father and God who did make the Spirit within
Accept my acknowledging truth of Your Creation
That the will of my spirit be Your Spirit
For from the Mighty River of Life it did arise
The origin of me, from what was before me Whole
Great Lord and King of all wisdom and knowledge and worth
Direct and heal the thoughts of my vicious conscious
That the wonder and awe of thought return as a child
Seeing beauty and newness and ideas spring forth
The origin of genius and judgment pure
Great Master and Crafter of all living beings
Strengthen and balance the talents of my flesh
That the gifts of experience be used to enhance life
Radiating the aura of peace from my very lifeblood
That one to another this body be a vessel of Your life
Dad – who is Most High and of the source of everything
Bless and Care and watch over those given to my life
For the givers of life have shared life with us
And the takers of life remind us of the desire for life
The greatest of them to the smallest – all have taught
How can my soul fail or be weary
When it is my own God
Who knits all the pieces together?
For where God has been invited
No darkness may dwell
Not even in the weakness of flesh!
How can my soul be lost or afraid
When it is my own God
Who arrives to protect, nourish and defend?
For where God has placed His care
No enemy may approach
Not even in the weakness of this world!
It is Well with My Soul.
