Winds of Change

The era went by
Side by side
Upon our horse
Even before I was born
Yet there it is
Still in my heart

How is it that I am uncomfortable with change
That has never occurred
In my life?

How much more can I understand
The difficult winds of change
For those who have felt
The motion of time?

I grew in a family
That all left their family
Traveling to far away places
To start their own families
Who in turn moved on
To other lands
Beginning their families

In that great minds eye
And hearts longing
When you still see your Father
As a man younger than you
And you still see your Mother
As a woman younger than your sister
And you still see your brother
As the kid with the 2 wheeled bike

And you still see your children
Running through the grass
Trying to climb the stairs
Discovering life for the first time
Even though now they are parents themselves…

Then can we feel that wind blow
Beyond our skin
Chilled down to the bones
And deep within the unforgotten heart

Though we often dread the change
When our worlds fall apart
Even is it so
We can fear the course
Of blessings

I do not fear the unknown
But rather fear the loss
Of the known

And everything we know
Is only relevant
For an instant

Such sorrow can touch the heart
When the wind turns the page
To a new chapter in our life
Without our consent

I am not ready to read on
As I hold my wife close
As I laugh with my grandson
As I witness the change in the lives of others

But who can say any different
And who can stop a thing
And who can capture a moment
Forever?

I must admit to my own tears
Of loss and longing
For things that did not even happen
While what I have known
And lost
Brings greater wounds
Upon my soul

So I open my heart
Towards a greater acceptance
Embracing what is new today
In the face of my own home
For it is not what it was
As the children move away
