Impermanent Purpose
If we think back to the time
When we were 5 years old
What would we have to say about our life today?
If we go back to the age of 7
And foresaw this future
What would we have believed?
Even if I had been given the greatest intelligence on earth
I could not have predicted the path of my life
And so the past is unfathomable
As the future is unthinkable
Therein does the meaning change
In the time of innocence
For every soul
Are dreams of the innocent dreams
In the time of childhood
Awaken the dreams
Of greatness
In the time of youth
Does the will rise
Attempting to make itself
And all of this that I had thought was myself
Was actually only the process
Designed to mature a mind
Permanent memory
With impermanent purpose
Because even now I can say
That when I was 33
I could not have imaged my future
As it is now at 43
What could I possibly know
Or say or do or envision or will
Of even one year from today?
As this meaning does now change again
To words of the inner self
Dispel the fantasy mind of will
In order to discover the potential ahead
Cast out the wants of today
In order to embrace the greater desires of tomorrow
Would it be wise to leave the choices of our life
To a 5 year old version of ourselves?
Too scared to do what we commonly do
Too ignorant to understand the importance
Of our work today.
So why should we leave the choices of our future
To the mind we have today?
Too scared to do what we will commonly do
Too ignorant to understand the importance
Of the work before us.
I hear it so loudly
It is deafening
“ARRIVE to where thou does walk
Take up thy staff set before thy feet
Flee not from the power given unto you
As he who is to be
Is not who is yet
Though shall be by design”
Who can say that this pattern of life
Will be anything like the pattern ahead?
When we now discern the difference
Within the limited time already lived
Would we even recognize the future of man
As anything from our own earth
When we could not even predict
The actions we take today
Yet even then will we not see?
That the lessons of ancient man
And our lessons today
Are the exact same lessons
Regardless of advance?
Will it always be ahead
That we have still not mastered
The meaning of life
Taught to us in every single generation?
It has been said:
“If we forget our past
We are doomed to repeat it”
Yet even in our memories
Does every generation of man
Repeat the mistakes of their fathers
As we too will to design our own life
Though we could not possibly predict
Anything
Perhaps we have it all wrong?
Perhaps it shall be
That we need to forget our Future
Or we shall be doomed to repeat our past?
In order to cease the repetition of vain planning
Found in every generation
Perhaps it is that we should
Let the future unfold
With the eyes of discovery?
Who is to say what is possible or not?
Just as the cavemen long ago
Would find a simple photograph
To be magical.
So too will I look back
And see that I am a caveman
Now.
