Transformation through Life’s Phases:The poem navigates different "chapters" in life, each representing a significant transformation—from family, community, hedonism, to spiritual awakening. These phases depict a journey of growth, where every chapter contributes to the shaping of the individual.

Solitude and Reflection:There's an exploration of how solitude brings clarity. The speaker experiences solitude in various forms: from physical isolation in a secluded home to emotional isolation in the "woods." Each time, solitude sparks reflection and introspection, leading to personal evolution.

Spiritual Awakening and Growth:A recurring theme of spiritual growth runs through the poem, with moments of deep personal awakening. The speaker distances themselves from past identities (as a "self-righteous zealot" or "lost in the woods of false prophets") and embraces spiritual clarity and truth.

The Role of Choice:At several points, the speaker reflects on choices—choices that led them astray, choices in times of hardship, and ultimately choices that guide them toward redemption and love. This shows the constant presence of agency in shaping the course of life.

Love and Liberation:The final chapters of the poem emphasize the theme of love as liberating. After enduring life’s trials, the speaker experiences a clear vision of love—symbolized by “9 sacred hours of joy”—leading to spiritual and emotional freedom.

The Cyclical Nature of Life:There is a strong sense of life moving in cycles or "chapters," with each phase building upon the last but also distinct in its own lesson and value. The speaker cannot return to past identities, but those past phases are what make the present possible.

Humility and Wisdom:Humility is presented as a virtue that emerges from the hardships of life. From "hedonism" to "poverty," the speaker learns the importance of wisdom, which brings peace, acceptance, and a clearer vision of what truly matters.

Chapters

In the beginning was the family
And the family was with god
And the family was god
Life in a northern town
Life in a secluded home
Life away from the world
Bonded always in our smiles of youth
Bless the parents who gave life

How dim it gets in the mind of solitude
Rested hospital stay grace
Dark choices do rise

Then I did stand upon the stage of folly
Drunk with new wine
Brothers in arms with song
The serpent did make his mark
The parasite did grasp
Hear her sting make men low
Watch her lie make men to war
Bless the master who gave flight

How dim it gets in the mind of community
Banished home
Many choices do rise

The land of sun gave altered hope
But pride still ruled the clay
Hunger makes men lose their way
Selling beauty for a meal
Selling effort for a thrill
Watching always for reasons why
Firmly planted on this path
Turning death into life
Seeking wisdom in the filth

How dim it gets in the mind of hedonism
Broken dreams do come
Final choices left to make

Here the cry of hope speak
Taking sorrow and pain
Turning to laughter and grace
As I weave the prosperity of gold
And speak righteousness with my tongue
Decades work never undone
Another she does take away
The song in my heart

How dim it gets in the mind of the idle craftsman
Setting down the stones
Another choice must be made

Oh this day was so very dark
The woods did welcome me
No friend in sight
But dogs did walk with me
On mountain sides and olden ground
As here I reset my covenant
There did I reclaim my body, my soul, my spirit
Then walked away to know great love

How dim it gets in the mind of poverty
Humility does rise
Choices to accept

But then, oh then was it all so clear
Before my eyes I could see the love of her appear
9 sacred hours of joy revealed our truth
Ancient promises gave rise
Bringing themselves to bear in light
Open every hidden door
Throw away the chains of time
This desire is everlasting

How free it gets in the mind of liberation
Humility shares a reward
Choices made were made before

Chapters make their mark on our lives. One day comes like any other day and then alters our course forever without warning. I cannot go back to the days of my family for I am no longer a child. I cannot go back to the days of my youth for I am no longer a prideful, lustful drunk. I cannot go back to the time of the work of my hands, for I am no longer a creator of smoke and mirrors. I cannot go back to the time of my spiritual awakening for I am no longer a self righteous zelot of spiritual matters. I cannot go back to the time of my poverty concerning all things human and spiritual… for I am no longer lost in the woods of false prophets.

Though each chapter gave way to the greater chapter ahead I would gain no strength from ever setting foot in the ways of my past. They were designed to bring me to the way of my life today. They were not meant for me to remain. They were beautiful then but I am no longer who I was. They would not be beautiful now.

There is the sound of another page turning. A new chapter is being written for us.

Before us lay the path
Of every stone we set down
That we make walk on firm ground
