Rest In Peace
What do we have that remains?
Life lives on even after life is gone
As the matter of another is not flesh
And the love of another is not bone
But by their spirit are they known to us
Who has not known loss?
Who has been free of sorrow?
In this life will many come and go
And some enhance our world ten fold
How terrible it is as they leave
Those left behind confront a vacuum
The security of all is shaken
The path before us alters unknown
Our friend has finished their work
We cannot add any more to their life
To the ground they return
Scattered to the sea they settle
But what of that one we knew?
Surely death reveals our vehicle
No longer do they dwell within!
Where then is the one we loved?
To the realm of the spirit are they
To the everlasting do they rest
In this they are not dead
By this they are not gone
For in us all is our own spirit
Within our hearts do we carry them
In honor and memory we do recall
In laughter and joy do we remember
And tho they depart, still they give
For in a moment I can hear them
In a second I can cherish their words
For a lifetime I can draw near to them
As their gifts of life to our life
Do not erase with the passing of time
Nor are we without what they shared
Even wisdom presents we had not noticed
Indeed I smile at a memory of them
Indeed am I humbled by their example
Truly their great wisdom teaches me
Even though I no longer hear new words
The flesh enjoys the closeness of life
And a body warmed with comforts
But the spirit is without requirement
Except for the protection of our love
For this reason do I cherish in spirit
The spirit of my departed loved ones
It was their spirit most bonded to
And their light which joined us first
For we choose they we are close to
Some by appearance of flesh
Many by common goals
Yet Most by one spirit to another
As the flesh ages
And the work is retired
What continues is our spiritual bond
What lives forever is our shared love
What remains… is them.
