For Gary
This week we lost a good and decent man to the heavens above. Gary was a kind soul inside who had seen his share of the darkness of life, but it did not crush his spirit. Instead he lived and loved all with equity, faithfulness and understanding.
Though I am a much younger man than he, Gary always treated me as a brother and as a kindred soul. Yet he had an authority about his composure that garnered him respect and honor as an elder statesman to be listened to. He had a wisdom about him born of the experience of life that few could balance with the same maturity and wealth of generosity.
One thing I truly loved about Gary was his sense of humor. Not only was his perspective and form of sharing stories hilarious , but He also had a most infectious laugh that could get an entire crowd laughing along with him.
I have spent my life as an observer of people. I observed Gary very deeply. I can say with most confidence that Gary truly loved everyone in his family, his Wife, his children, his step children and grandkids and everyone in between. His words about such things were honest and humble. He knew he had a goldmine in the family and friends surrounding him, and he made everyone feel valued.
Gary also valued forgiveness. Anyone who came to him honestly was easily forgiven of their missteps by Gary. He never wanted separation between himself and those he loved. So his heart sought out forgiveness of everyone so he could be close to them in every manner. Gary taught me many facets of life and the life of a man unafraid to keep trying no matter what happens. He enjoyed being creative and painting images that brought him peace to his soul.
I can say this. Peace within a man is probably the most valued commodity of all those I have looked up to as a father figure or authority or a man of wisdom. Gary showed me new ways to find peace within and openly would share his experience and ideas and beliefs if asked. I owe him much of what I value today in life. And I will never forget my friend and brother Gary.
I love you man!
