Departed Parents
The Question of Identity in Grief:It explores how the death of loved ones affects our self-perception—how we mourn not only their absence but also the past version of ourselves they knew and loved.
The Irreconcilable Gap Between Then and Now:There's a poignant tension between wanting to remain the child they cherished and the necessity of evolving beyond who we were when they were alive.
Timeless Love Versus Temporal Change:While the parents are immortalized in memory—unchanging and revered—the narrator is in constant motion, changing with life, leaving behind the person they once were.
A Declaration of Eternal Love:Despite transformation, the poem ends with a powerful affirmation: love remains steadfast. The narrator’s love for their parents transcends time and change, rooted in both the beginning and the end.

Departed Parents
Does it matter
Great father and Great mother
That all I had done before your eyes
Exists no more?
Your words of pride, and of love
To the boy and man I was,
Does it matter
He is no longer there?
How do we embrace the memory
Of what was given to us then?
How do we accept the impossible fact
That they are needed more now than before
When they can no longer be given
And they can no longer be received?
Emptiness of heart remains
Where you lived in me
Not just of your absence
But of the absence of who I was
When you knew me
And embraced me
And taught me
And showed me the way
And shared meals and laughter
Together with me
And I with you.
For you are timeless now to us all
Carved in stone as the Souls we love
Never changing, never becoming less
Enduring all things in memory
Unforgotten, heralded, honoured
But where is the one you loved in me?
For I am ever changing
Ever wounded of loss and seeking
And he whom you last looked upon
Departed even myself
As does time reveal a new face
A new heart, and mind
A new purpose today
Then before adorned your words
Of the son you knew
Does it matter to you
Mother and Father
Where you are now
In another life sublime
That my reflection washed away?
That my world you knew changed?
That my hands created a new thing
You never knew?
I want to be the son you loved
But I am not
For I must grow and reach
For ever more
I must let go, and allow change
I must use what you and God gave
To become what is meant for me to be
But of this there can be no doubt
Nor will this ever be different in me
That I am still he who loves you
As I loved you in the beginning
And as I loved you in your end
So too will I forever love you
My Father, and my Mother
