The Journey of a Man
I set my mind to being my own man
Knowing that was the answer I sought
How free I would be!
I set my mind to performing music
Knowing that was the goal I needed
How great I shall feel on stage!
I set my desire to wooing women
Knowing that would make me a man
How their lust will fulfill me!
I set my will on drunkenness
Knowing that was the peace I wanted
Oh how perfect fearlessness is!
I set my effort on success
Knowing money was proof of right
Oh how good to drive my sports car!
I set my heart on study
Knowing knowledge would fix me
Oh how the answer is somewhere!
I set my strength on perfection
Knowing no one could argue me
How powerful it is to be great
I set my path in darkness
Knowing I had ancient purpose
Oh how the answer is there!
I set my courage to war
Surely facing death was key
How fearless and powerful I will be!
I surrounded myself with power
Knowing those men wanted my answers
Oh how they will respect me!
I looked under every rock
Chased every dream
Indulged every desire
Puffed my pride without limit
Stroked my self importance
Walked in deep darkness
Experienced blazing light
And accomplished all I set to do
And for all that work and effort
And all that time and expense
In the end was it all gone
In the end I lost everything I had
In the end I was not satisfied
In the end was I broken
And in the end did it give nothing
For within these bones
Is a powerful thirst
And one for which I could not identify
In this heart is a chamber empty
That no thing or experience could answer
In this spirit is an endless black hole
And I tried filling it with earthly things
All things I did find, seemed good
And truly they are wonderful for us
As the things of flesh comfort flesh
But no comfort could be found in me
For it was my spirit that lacked life
Of my bones they received life
And in the journey has it been good
But I could not feed my spirit
With food and drink
And I could not answer my spirit
With women and wine
And I could not awaken my spirit
With success and prosperity
And I could not love my spirit
With pride and ego and worldly things
It is my spirit all along that sought
For of my flesh has it had its needs
Yet I suffered damning isolation
And powerlessness within me
Because I had not fed my spirit
As the fruit gives nutrients to my body
So too does God give life to my spirit
And the humbling of my failure
Brought me finally to God for help
Therein did I find what I had sought
From the very beginning
This was not the god of my learning
Nor was it the god of religious words
Indeed men speak nonsense of God
And the world seeks ever still
Just as I sought always
God did answer my spirit
This was the God of life
This was the God of love
This was the Christ of my longing
And the Father of my hope
And He set before me a new law
One of understanding and acceptance
One of wisdom and kindness
One of knowledge and awakening
One of eternity and wonder
And God began to feed my spirit
And with each day does satisfy me
My thirst is answered with power
And my hope is restored
My reliance shifted away from the finite
To the infinite
Away from the temporary
To the everlasting
How great a journey it was
Even the darkness and wrath
For in the end has all been answered
So that tomorrows questions
Will also be considered.
May I never forget the truth
Of my own experience
That God is what I sought
And simply didn’t know
So that I may enjoy the fruit of my labor
Giving earth to the joy of flesh
And that I may enjoy the fruit of the spirit
Giving spirit to the power of spirit
Promised by God
For all who seek Him.
How humble and great it is
To feel Gods love
In that former place
of pure emptiness in me!
