The Hidden Father

A son who lost a Father
And a Father who lost a son
Join together in mutual need
Bond together in mutual trust

For what makes a man a father?
That he be biological?
That he be the one who raised?
That he be responsible?

And what makes a man a son?
That he be born to them?
That he obey an elder?
That he carry their name?

Truly love doesn’t die
When a loved one passes
Nor must we live in the emptiness
They left behind

For of this world are sons and fathers
Who are fatherless and childless
Yet needing still both of one another
Yet hoping still both for connection

Visit the elderly and see how they stare
“You look like my son!”
“I have a son just like you”
The stories they wish to share are gold!

Visit an orphanage, see how they stare
“I would be a good son!”
“Take me with you, I want a family”
The desire of their heart is humbling

And if we listen as sons
Do we hear the voice of our fathers
And if we listen as fathers
Do we hear the voice of our sons

For all men, no matter our age
Require an elder with trusted wisdom
And all men, no matter our age
Desire to pass on what we know

Each of us a son and father
Hoping the best for those we guide
Hoping the best of those who guide us
Wanting to fill the void of human need

For it is that any man
Who takes another under his wing
To protect and guide, love and teach
Is a Father

And it is that any man
Who honours another as elder
To listen and respect, love and help
Is a son

I am a son and a father
Though my father has passed
And my son has passed
Still do I have both

For others have I taken under my wing
And treated as sons
And give all I have – that they have
And share all I know – so they know

Others have taken me under their wing
And treated me as son
And shared what they have – so I have
And teach what they know – so I know

As he who gives of himself is a father
And he who receives with honor is a son
Do we see that always and forever
The very hope we have cherished…

Is everywhere before us.

For in the end it is God our Father
Who is always with us
Speaking also through us
When we love anyone as father or son
