The Great Witness
Who among us can claim to be Great
And add even one coin to the world?
Neither have we added value to ourselves,
But just in an illusion are we made foolish.
Truly I say it is when we see the greatness
In all those around us
Do we find the Priceless Treasure everywhere
It is the men and women of my youth, our family, who just by blood would stand to defend every young one with no reward. They are Great because they gave and would give all that they had and learned and experienced to the next generation. Music and logic and inspiration and hope and knowledge did they share with myself and cousins and children and grandchildren. How often we did listen, and observe and gain by their example and talent! Their Greatness was not unseen, nor unheard – but witnessed and accounted for.
It is the friends and fellows of my youth, our mates, who just by connection would inspire and give purpose. The others who picked up a guitar, and shared of their fathers hand oiled crafts in making instruments, and showed their love of music. They who even while young perfected a song, and awakened joy in those who witnessed them. The teams who played in schools and represented the ideals of our community, they too brought inspiration and pride. Even now, as men, do I know some of these who were Great then, and still Great now. For even in memory do they continue to inspire, and in their continued efforts proved the memory to be faithful and worthy. All of them Great who I was blessed to witness.
It is the leaders and teachers and guides who not by arrogance did bring forth knowledge and ideas and skills to they who listened – but by wonderment and sharing of their awe of such things – firing the imagination to dream and explore. These men and women exposed greatness to the whole world, and do so even now. For the humble teacher of any idea harnesses more power to affect greatness in others, than does those who hold power themselves. Every one of them Great – and every one remembered.
It is the Bosses and societies and circles who in their time did share all of their knowledge and wisdom and successes with me, who are of the Greats! For they welcomed me into their inner circles and their particular and rare worlds who gave enormous treasures most never find. All of them gifts, and all of them did add value to life and to my life that cannot be calculated.
It is the men who I have called brothers – who spent their lives in pursuit of reality with me, knowing not how often I would witness their great love and bond and acceptance. They who would offer trust and loyalty and spend years of their life creating music and art and new ideas about our spirits together with me. How we would dream of this idea of God – and seek reconciliation with logic and reason and science and history and ancient stories. How boldly we would dismantle every principle and law and custom to find it merit and truth! What great men and women this life has given to me, and will continue to give because of their Greatness and curiosity!
It is the women who have dared to love me, especially the wife of my world today. They who walked through the insanity of my life, held the broken pieces of my worlds, accepted the nonconformity of my manner who are of particular greatness! They who exposed their secrets with great trust, and walked beside me intimately are profound. And now she who calls herself my Wife, unlike any and all I’ve known; creative, passionate about life, and without exception always willing to strive. Who can carry the weight of a madman except the exceptional? Who can sooth the flesh of a tyrant other than a woman of other understanding? Who can see the whole man unless with whole willingness does perceive? Who can understand the one not understood, even to himself? Yet given to my life has been this very blessing of the example and life of a woman loved and of love without cause but for loves sake. Extraordinary and brilliant as of a treasure counted anew in each day.
It is not I who finds rest or peace or gratitude or fulfilment by the counting of my own works, by the pride of my own assessment, or by the desire of my own greatness.
It is I who finds the treasures of life, Greater than all that can be measured or weighed, by witnessing all who are great around me. My life is full, above the mountain, below the sea floor, with multitudes of great and mighty people.
Of any works or deeds of merit done by me, it was even they who inspired and gave hope that I could put my hand to it and accomplish it! Even the works of my own hands, is because of the greatness of others and not of my own.
By our witness has our world been made greater.
THIS is the treasure of greatness free and available to all who seek. For we find it not in our selves, but in others. We see that what God had given to them, they had also given to us. As THEN do we see that each and every one had placed THEIR prize within us and it is their God given greatness we witness to in ourselves.
