Baptism of Elders
Listen to the elders
Who speak of natural things
For they remember the making of life
And the perfection of earth’s balance
Listen to the elders
Who speak of peaceful things
For they have quieted their rage
And have great words for your spirit
Listen to the elders
Who speak of their experience
For they have paid a heavy price
That you may gain knowledge freely
Listen to the elders
Who speak of spiritual things
For they have found life’s purpose
And reflect God in their example
Tho the world tries to shame and scare
Still many live in freedoms light
For wisdom comes to those who seek
And the discovery of it is as gold
Whatever my imagination today
Tomorrow will require of it
And of the day after, more is called
So that each day offers growth
A hardened heart is stagnation of life
And the desire of it is foolish
None can learn the lesson of today
While wrestling with one’s own pride
A soft heart awakens curiosity
And the desire to learn is Godly
More can be discovered in that awe
Than one’s own normal progress
This requires humility of spirit
For the flesh shall never humble
Yet the spirit is above flesh and blood
And once awakened, becomes master
The blood is the life
In the temple of man
But God is the life
In the spirit of man
Awaken you spirits who do sleep
For the children of men
Rise and fall as all men
Knowing not before or after
Awaken you spirits who do sleep
For the children of God
Rise beyond all imagination
With grace given wisdom of life
Empty the cup of our former ways
Let the spirit be filled in its place
For starved have our spirits been
As we had filled our flesh with desire
The nourishment of man
Is food and drink and breath
But the nourishment of his spirit
Comes only from God in Heaven
So let us call out to God
That He will hear our plea for life
That we may master ourselves as He
And follow His work with joy
These the elders do know
As they tried all other matters
Given time and lesson and result
Have they found the way of God
That we lay down our own knowing
And we lay down our need for pride
It is all just misdirected fear
Covering weakness with false strength
But the true strength is of the spirit
Once flowing in the will of God
For of such no weakness exists
And of such none can take away
It is a treasure the wicked cannot see
While the humble heart adores it
As what God gives you is yours
And you can share it all without losing
Awaken each day and inquire of God
What today can I do for my brothers?
He will give you new strength and power
And fulfill all your daily needs
Baptism is the first moment of this
But it ends not there at all
Awaken each day and embrace God
Or be fooled once again by ourselves
Choose to feed your spirit always
For this moment is everlasting life
