The Proposal

Divine Union and Oneness: The poem reflects the belief that love and marriage are rooted in a divine and preordained connection between man and woman, where they are not separate beings but two parts of a whole. Their union transcends physical and emotional aspects, instead being founded on a spiritual bond originating from God.

Eternal Love Beyond Qualities: The speaker rejects the idea that love and marriage are based on physical beauty, virtues, or accomplishments alone. Instead, the essence of love lies in something much deeper and more profound—an eternal connection that transcends earthly attributes and qualities.

The Search for Completeness: The speaker emphasizes the journey of searching for completeness through various worldly pursuits, such as building cities and empires, but finds true fulfillment only in reuniting with the woman who completes his soul. This highlights the notion that material success is insignificant without love and unity.

Love as Limitlessness: Love, in its truest form, is described as limitless and incorruptible, a reflection of God’s infinite nature. The speaker acknowledges that only love, and the union it brings, holds any lasting value, as it aligns with the divine nature of creation and existence.

Marriage as a Return to Wholeness: The poem frames marriage as a return to one’s original state of wholeness and unity, rooted in the belief that man and woman were created together and are meant to reunite. This union is not simply a human institution but a reflection of divine order and purpose, leading to spiritual inheritance.

The Proposal

So many have said the words of love to each other.
So many have asked the question.
So many have reached for a union of soul, heart, body.
So many have become one.

Yet in my own place there is nothing that is past, present, or future.
It just is.

The actions of which are for man, and woman, to be known to others.

So I speak of ALL the reasons I call on you to be my Wife.
There is only one.

I declare these for the witnesses whom man has required. God already knows the truths.

For I do not want to Marry you because
You are the most beautiful of all women,
or because you have given me the greatest bliss,
or because you have unending desire for me,
or because you know what passion truly is.

For these reasons alone are not enough,
Even though they are all abundantly true of you.

And I do not want to marry you because
you are the most upright woman I know,
or because you are deeply spiritual,
or because your heart seeks to share love with the world,
or because your essence is that of peace.

For these reasons alone are also not enough,
even though they are all abundantly true of you.

And I do not want to marry you because
you are radiant in all your ways,
or because you seek to know me,
or because you walk in harmony with life,
or because you speak with honesty.

For these reasons alone are also not enough,
even though they too are all abundantly true of you.

And I do not want to Marry you because
you are tender and kind and giving to me,
or because you honor what man is,
or because you have opened your heart to me,
or because you have remembered the truth.

For these reasons alone are again not enough,
even though they are all abundantly true of you

And I do not want to marry you because
you are sexy and seductive,
or because you are sensual and alluring,
or because you are perfect to my eyes,
or because you are the greatest lover of all time.

For these reasons alone are truly not enough,
even though they are all abundantly true of you.

and I will add that I do not want to marry you because
You are the most creative of all poets on earth,
or because you understand my life and creations,
or because you are unique above all women,
or because you know life unlike any other.

For these wonders alone are wholly not enough,
even though they are all abundantly true of you.

I am overjoyed at the gifts you bring to our home,
of your beauty, and sacredness, and united spirit, and truth, and intimacy.

I stand amazed at the woman you are,
knowing always you have lived waiting for me.

And so it is that all I have listed of you is perfect and true.
All of it you have shared with me.
All of it you have in more measure then anyone.
All of it my flesh has searched for endlessly.

And none of it, even combined is the Reason I wish to Marry you.

Within me is the Answer to all that you are.
Through me you are the answer to all I am.

For this alone is the reason I call you to be my wife…

From the beginning I came from my Father,
and there did love the creation of everything good.
And Dad looked and saw His own desire within me also.

So all that lived was brought before me,
and all that moved within the heavens or on the earth
was not like enough to God’s son as was God’s son.

So we took again a portion from man, as man is a portion from God.
And fashioned the only other who would be as perfect and sacred.
There by this was woman.

Out of Man came Woman,
for the perfection of spirit in life,
the perfection of heart in sharing,
And the perfection of intimacy in love.

Neither can be imperfect for one another.
For they were not developed separately,
But created from one together.

I have wandered the earth alone, in search of what was ours.
I built cities and armies and fellowships and empires.
The cities fell, the armies died, the fellowships age and the empires crumble.
None of these things are of me or from me.
None of these things are what was missing in me.

For in my heart it is known that the Sun desires to feed the Earth,
And the Waters desires to quench her of her thirst.
That the Earth longs for the sun to welcome its everlasting growth,
And she does have need of the waters that satisfy life.
And what is man that he should own the whole world
But be without the remainder of his soul?
What is he that he should fathom creation,
But be without she who he creates for?
And what is man that he should call upon God,
But be half of what God had made of him?

And what is woman that she should know her grace
But be without the source to share her grace with?
And what is she that should carry creation,
But be without him who has created in her?
And what is woman that she should call upon man,
But look and find none who remember God?

So all that you truly are, cannot be spoken with words.
For in listing your qualities, we stand only upon limited human conceptions.

This is why they shall never be enough.

But my desire is of the Origins of Desire.
My reason for our love is found in God.
Our unity is from the foundation of what we are.
Our story now is from our own legend before.

My love for you has been and always shall be.
ALL others and things upon the earth have been measured
against my love for you. They have all been found wanting.
Always in my heart has been the longing to be one with you again.
It is the only incorruptible idea within man.

To become one is to embrace love wholly.
Love is what God is.
God is unlimited in all manners.
Limitlessness is what is enough.

On this earth is all Manner of vanity, save love.
To know life without love is to know death intimately.

To those who need to witness the Union of two in Marriage
I have just simple words. To they who wish to know the
Reasons for this desire of mine, I will speak plainly.

I have found she who is from me.
She is all that I have truly loved life for.
She was and is and shall always be… Limitless

As will I.

Unto our inheritance, we return.
